Call 24/7/365 for help and/or information on domestic or sexual violence. Trained staff and volunteers can offer support, community & AEDV resources, encouragement and access to emergency shelter. All calls are confidential.

Every person is entitled to a safe environment free from the fear of violence. For some, our shelter is their best option. Amenities include security, furnished and well-stocked apartments with a kitchen and laundry, access to a fully fenced play area, and the support of our staff, programs and services. The Sexual Assault Response Advocates crisis and texting hotlines are available 24/7/365 to provide support, guidance and empowerment to survivors of sexual assault. With SARA’s help, victims can get support when making a police report and information on obtaining a sexual assault forensic examination. Referrals to available community resources and assistance in applying for county and state victims of crime compensation can also be provided. All calls are confidential and anonymous unless you give consent otherwise.

SARA is also available for training sessions, speaking engagements, health fairs and community outreach to increase awareness and provide access to services.

AEDV provides confidential, survivor-centered services for individuals who have experienced human trafficking. Support begins with 24-hour crisis intervention through our hotline and continues with safe emergency shelter, case management, and trauma-informed advocacy. Staff help survivors understand their options, develop safety plans, and connect with medical care, counseling, legal resources, and community partners.

Through our Sexual Assault Response Advocates (SARA) program, trained advocates respond alongside law enforcement and medical providers to ensure survivors are believed, supported, and informed throughout every step. AEDV also offers individualized life-skills support, including budgeting, parenting guidance, and referrals to long-term housing and stabilization programs.

All services are free, confidential, and designed to help survivors regain safety, dignity, and control over their lives.

Teen dating violence stats are staggering. One in three adolescents has been verbally, emotionally or physically abused by a dating partner. Sixty-two percent of tweens aged 11-14 say they know friends who have been verbally abused by a boyfriend or girlfriend, and one in five tweens say they know a friend who had been physically hurt by a girlfriend or boyfriend.

AEDV, together with the Carson City School District, work to stop violence before it starts. Age-appropriate interactive classes for middle school and high school students teach the dynamics of healthy relationships and the red flags of abusive relationships.

Support groups offer survivors a nurturing, open space to share experiences and triumphs, and serve as a friendly reminder that you are not alone. A facilitator helps participants overcome trauma and move toward a place of healing and growth.

All support groups are 100% confidential. Community groups meet Wednesdays from 10-11:00am at 3640 Gordon Street, Carson City and are offered without charge. Call (775) 883-7654 for more information.

Parenting has its challenges. The effects of domestic violence on children as well as a change in home life can escalate these challenges. Our Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) classes focus on:

• Encouraging communication & cooperation

• Teaching positive reinforcement

• Creating alternatives to misbehavior

• Exploring discipline options

• Building the child’s self-esteem

Classes are available to parents staying at our shelter as well as community members without charge. Call 775-883-7654 for more information.

Classes are individualized to focus on financial literacy. This includes creating a budget, banking basics, repairing and building credit, and developing a habit of monetary saving.

Lack of employment, transportation, social services and even basic life skills can be barriers to becoming economically and emotionally independent. Our Positive Action Toward Hope (PATH) program offers shelter residents an individually tailored plan that helps break the cycle and creates a path to a violence-free, independent life. Assistance may include securing identity documents for the family, applying for social services, resume writing, job training, locating childcare, stress management and self-care.

Victim Court Advocates are located on the third floor of the Carson City Courthouse. The program offers victims information regarding the different options available to them such as community resources and helps them navigate the judicial process through the following services:

• Assistance with applying for temporary, stalking and harassment orders

• Court accompaniment

• Attend arraignments and hearings

• Take photos to document injuries

• Safety planning

• Assistance with police reports

• Help with Victims of Crime Compensation applications

• Emotional support

• Referral for community services

• Notify victims of TPO renewal dates

• Bilingual, Spanish-speaking

• VINE program registration for offender release information

Attending court proceedings can be intimidating and scary for a victim who has to face the abuser. The Victims Court Advocates attend hearings with clients to inform them of the process, act as support, process the outcome of the hearing afterward, and help develop a safety plan.

A temporary protection order (TPO) may not be enough to ensure safety. Victims may need to consider relocating to a safe place to seek shelter. The following information about the abuser will be needed to complete a TPO application:

• Full name

• Employer’s address - if working

• Description of abuser

• Date of birth

• Addresses of places the abuser must stay away from (your home, schools, family, work)

Keep a CERTIFIED court copy of the protection order with you at all times as well as providing copies to any schools or daycares that may be responsible for a child’s safety.

It is important to REPORT and document any violation immediately to the Carson City Sheriff’s Office.
