Our Shelter

For decades, we have broken the stereotype of what a domestic violence safe house looks like, feels like, heals like. (See our photos below.) In June 2023, we broke ground on a new shelter that will have all the supportive programs and services plus an even more modern, welcoming environment. From comfortable beds and private bathrooms to cozy sofas and in-unit laundry, the new shelter promises inviting, apartment-style living to serve individuals and families needing a safe haven and support in the Carson City and surrounding area. (To donate, please view our wish list.)

AEDV is proud to maintain a low barrier to shelter access. Our shelter and services help survivors heal while developing the skills to ultimately return to a violence-free home of their own.

If shelter is not the right option for you, our team can offer other resources to help meet your needs. AEDV is client-centered and committed to boosting personal empowerment to break the cycle of violence and prevent abuse before it starts.

Seeking shelter? Start here.

Step #1: Contact our 24/7/365 crisis line.

(775) 883-7654

An advocate will listen, ask questions and assess if the emergency shelter is the best resource to meet your needs. If so, our team will coordinate to safely welcome you into the shelter and quickly get the basics covered: food, clothing, medical attention, linens, toiletries and more.

What’s next?

  • The first 72 hours at the shelter are considered a cooling off period. You are given the space to reflect upon your situation without worrying about your safety or basic care. Please note: You are free to leave at any time.

  • If you choose to remain at the shelter, we will spend the next two weeks developing a plan of action to address your needs. Goals may include scheduling counseling, legal aid, training, education, employment, childcare, transportation, and housing. Our caseworkers will help secure needed identification and apply for resources and housing. Learn more about our Programs & Services.

Emergency stay is available from one night up to three months, with an additional two months possible upon extension approval. If you need additional time, transitional housing may be an option and can offer housing and support.
